How to Make the Most of a Job Fair

Many people forget that job fairs are a great opportunity to find a new employment or to further your current career. Job fairs feature numerous recruiters from the top companies in an industry, and many companies will be actively looking to hire new employees. If you plan to attend a job fair, try taking advantage of the following tips to get the most out of your efforts.

Dress Professionally

If you want to present a professional image, you will have to dress the part. Before attending a fair, be sure to wear comfortable, business-like attire and perform your regular personal hygiene routine. You may want to refrain from wearing too much perfume or cologne – some people may have allergies. Wear neutral colors such as black, gray, dark blue or khaki, and refrain from bright, flashy colors. Also, be sure to wear comfortable, yet professional shoes – you may be expected to stand for the duration of the fair.

Bring Plenty of Resumes

You will need to bring plenty of resume copies to the career fair, and the number you bring should depend on the number of companies you intend to distribute your resume to. Before printing your resume, be sure:

  • There are no grammatical errors or misspelled words.
  • You have used a unique, professional format.
  • Your jobs are listed in reverse chronological order.
  • There is an opening statement and skills, work history, education and contact information sections.

You may want to bring references just in case you are asked for them, but do not list them on your resume.

Follow up With Recruiters

After the job fair, you will need to follow up with the companies and individuals you reached out to. Forty-eight hours after the fair, you should send thank-you emails to every recruiter you interacted with, even if you are not actively interested in working for their company. This act of appreciation will show you are serious about your career, and if a position opens up at a company, the recruiter will more than likely remember you.
